St Mary's College is OUTSTANDING
1st December 2023
In a recent triumphant Ofsted inspection at St Mary's College in Hull the school was awarded an ‘Outstanding’ rating for the second time by inspectors in every
aspect of the education it delivers.
The school has now held this status for over 13 years and were the first secondary school and sixth form in the city of Hull to be rated ‘Outstanding’ back in 2010.
The inspection which took place at the end of October forensically scrutinised all aspects of the school including the quality of its teaching, student outcomes, the effectiveness of its leadership, personal development, and the overall learning environment. St Mary's College exceeded all expectations in every category, earning the highest rating possible from the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills. “The behaviour and attitudes of pupils are exceptional. A clear behaviour system is in place. High quality pastoral support is available for all pupils.” (Ofsted 2023).
One of the many key strengths highlighted in the inspection report was the exemplary and innovative approach to personal development demonstrated by the staff team. One inspector commented that schemes such as those in place for personal development ‘have to be seen to be believed!’. Teachers at St Mary's College were praised for the ambitious and engaging methods they use, fostering an environment that encourages students to excel academically and personally whilst developing a genuine passion for learning.
“The curriculum moves beyond the national curriculum. The ‘golden threads’ of knowledge have been carefully woven into every subject.” (Ofsted 2023).
“The sixth form provision at St Mary’s College is outstanding. All aspects of life in the sixth form supports students to access future learning and positive destinations.” (Ofsted 2023)
On receiving the news of the outstanding rating head of school Maria Stead expressed her gratitude to the entire school community, “It would not have been possible to achieve this exceptional outcome without the passion and ceaseless commitment of all staff at St Mary’s College towards the children in our care. The final comment from inspectors was that “St Mary’s is a sanctuary for all its pupils.” This moved me to tears because it is genuinely what I believe, and what we strive for every day. It is a privilege to work with such talented and unique children and staff alongside families. St Mary’s College is truly an outstanding school.”
The outstanding Ofsted rating is another significant milestone for St Mary's College which was also awarded ‘World Class School’ status in perpetuity in 2023, reinforcing its position as an institution which provides the highest quality education to local children and young people.
As the school community celebrates this achievement there is a collective sense of pride and a motivation to continue this pursuit of excellence in education as we move forward.
