St Mary’s College Among Top 4 Schools in Yorkshire for Attendance
9th April 2025
We’re delighted to share some fantastic news with our community—St Mary’s College has been ranked 4th in Yorkshire for school attendance, according to data published by the Yorkshire Post and the Department for Education.
This recognition reflects our shared commitment—between school and families—to ensure that every young person is in class, learning, and thriving as much as possible. While schools across the country continue to face higher absence rates following the pandemic, St Mary’s has maintained excellent attendance levels throughout the 2023–2024 school year.
The Government’s latest report showed that nationally, one in five pupils are now classed as ‘persistently absent’—a figure that’s nearly doubled since before COVID-19. At St Mary’s, we have bucked that trend together, thanks to the dedication of our pastoral teams, students, parents and staff working together to prioritise education.
Research from the Department for Education shows just how important regular attendance is. Pupils who attend school nearly every day in Year 11 are almost twice as likely to achieve strong passes (Grade 5 or above) in English and Maths GCSEs—key qualifications for their future.
We’re incredibly proud of this achievement and grateful for your continued support in helping your child attend school every day, ready to learn and succeed.
