National Recognition: Hull Performance Academy Shines at the Music & Drama Education Awards

While we didn’t return to Hull with the trophy this year, being named a national finalist in the 'Excellence in Musical Theatre Provision' category at the Music & Drama Education Awards is a milestone that speaks volumes.

Standing alongside the most respected institutions in the country, the SMC Hull Performance Academy was recognised once again on a grand stage. This achievement is a direct reflection of the exceptional work, grit, and creativity happening across the faculty every single day. This honour belongs to every member of our team and every student who steps onto our stage.

The evening was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Hearing stories from schools and colleges across the UK revealed a beautiful, shared mission. We heard about:

• Young people finding their voices through performance.
• Communities being strengthened by local creativity.
• Barriers being broken down as the arts become more inclusive than ever.

It reinforced the idea that our work at SMC extends far beyond the final curtain call; it is about changing lives and building confidence.

One of the most moving moments of the night was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to the legendary Cicely O’Neill. Her closing words were incredibly poignant. She spoke honestly about the challenges facing the arts and the uncertainty many educators feel in the current climate.

However, the energy in the room told a different story. In a world where the arts are often sidelined, the innovation and resilience on display proved that our industry isn't diminishing—it is thriving. There is a fierce belief in the power of drama and music education, and Hull Performance Academy is firmly at the heart of that movement.

Last night affirmed that our vision matters and the opportunities we create for our students are world-class. To our staff: thank you for the countless "invisible" hours you put in behind the scenes. Because of you, our students receive some of the very best Arts education in the UK.

We are coming home inspired, validated, and ready for the next act.
