FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

Aims of the course:
- Functional skills allows students to develop their maths skills in real life contexts. This course is an ideal course to be taken whilst working towards GCSE maths.
What are lessons like?
- The lessons are taught by experienced teachers and there are lots of opportunities to work through past and practice papers. Students are given lots of opportunities to develop their basic number work
What are exams like?
- The exams are “on demand” and can be taken when the students are ready.
- There is a non-calculator section and a caluculator section. Both are attempted in the same sitting.
Recommended prior learning /entry requirements:
- Students whose best maths grade is a grade 1 at GCSE will study Level 1 functional skills. Students whose best maths grade is a grade 2 at GCSE or who have passed Level 1 will study Level 2 functional skills.
- Students who pass level 2 functional skills will be moved onto the GCSE course.

- A course folder will be provided for the students.
Where can this course lead to?
- Functional skills or GCSE Maths is often required for university courses and apprenticeships.
