Aims of the course:

This is a one-year intensive ESOL course designed for students who are new to the UK and want to improve their English prior to progressing onto further learning, training or employment.

Gateway Qualifications- *ESOL Skills for Life.

This qualification was developed by ESOL experts and tutors.

  • It is designed to offer the flexibility required to meet EAL [English as an Additional Language] learner needs alongside robust assessment.
  • It offers flexible assessments with real-life tasks which learners can relate to.
  • Designed to ensure EAL learners are well placed to achieve their goals and progress to higher level qualifications, training or employment.

The qualification is delivered and examined at:

  • Entry Level
  • Level 1
  • Level 2

The qualification has 4 components:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening

Each component is available individually as an Award or as an overarching Certificate

At St Mary’s Sixth Form, this course is generally delivered as a one-year intensive course, however depending on learner age, needs and suitability, we can extend this to 2 years Alongside this course you will also study for a Functional Skills qualification in Numeracy and will engage in other curriculum enrichment activities.

What are lessons like?

The material for the lessons is sourced from everyday life. Lessons are interactive and you will have access to ICT in most of the lessons.
